Flannery OConner Essay Example For Students
Flannery OConner Essay 1.I have heard a great deal about my father, tales of extreme hubris and smugness were always mixed with those of noble and humble intentions. He seemed to exemplify at times the focus of this essay on pride by Frazier. 2.Men, more so than women in my experience, seem to be guilty of: not stopping for directions, attempting to fix things about the house with little or no knowledge of them, zoning out in front of the television, commonly being afflicted with hubris, this is the main weakness of males. 3.The difference between pride and stupidity will be decidedly luck. 4.When does pride become stupidity? Describe the line. 5.What can a person do to try curbing this appetite for taking pride min things of little or no value?6.The knowledge of kid Icarus is somewhat vital in understanding the other analogies in this essay, for they are all basically the same. 7.The line between love, bravery, pride and being funny is a fine one and only luck keeps us on the right side. C.Summarize-In life we often times try to take on what we do not understand in hopes that pride and luck will carry us through. Things that seem half-brained any other time become amazingly good ideas under the influence of pride. Frazier demonstrates this beautifully. Pride is what we see as one of the worst attributes to have in yourself. Yet, sometimes it is the driving force of great acts that take place. The game is hit and miss at best. D.Imitate-Ive looked at it from many angles, wondering how the feat was managed, admiring the mountaineering skill it took, and in the process noticing the architecture of this estimable old building much more closely than I ever would have otherwise. I have gazed down upon it from many viewpoints, pondering why this had been performed, noticing the performance skill required, and in the process admiring the octave scale of this newer piece of music much more closely than I would have otherwise. E. Rhetoric- The language in this essay is simple and downplayed form many of the other essays I have read in this book. It was quite refreshing to read words so plain and true about a topic that affects everyone in the world (mostly men). Pride was funny in its frankness and delectably simple. A mere 1 pages long this essay said what it needed to in the easiest words possible and got out. Frazier seemed to follow Carvers advice on writing essays and short stories.

To Kill A Mockingbird Scouts Maturity Essay Example For Students
To Kill A Mockingbird Scouts Maturity Essay As people grow in life, they mature and change. In the novel , To Kill a Mockingbird ,by Harper Lee, Scout, the main character, matures as the book continues. Slowly but surely, Scout learns to control her explosive temper, to refrain from fistfights, and to respect Calpurnia, their maid, and to really learn her value to the family. Scout simply changes because she matures, and she also changes because Atticus, her father, asks her to. In the early chapters of the book, Scout picks fights at the slightest provocation. One example of this is when Scout beats up Walter Cunningham, one of her classmates, for not having his lunch, which isnt a very good reason at all. Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop. Youre biggern he is, he said He made me start off on the wrong foot. Let him go Scout. Why? He didnt have any lunch, I said, and explained my involvement in Walters dietary affairs (27). Scout is also very mischievous and has a devious mentality towards Calpurnia. We will write a custom essay on To Kill A Mockingbird Scouts Maturity specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now She describes Calpurnia as a tyrannical presence, and she does everything she can to get her out of the house. One time Scout does this is when Walter comes over to her house to eat dinner. Scout criticizes Walter for drowning his food in molasses, and Calpurnia scolds Scout. After Walter leaves, Scout asks Atticus to fire Calpurnia, which of course he doesnt do. Jem said suddenly grinned at him. Come on home to dinner with us, Walter, he said. Walter stood where he was, biting his lip. Jem and I gave up, and we were nearly to the Radley Place when Walter called, Hey, Im comin! While Walter piled food on his plate, he and Atticus talked together like to men, to the wonderment of Jem and me. Atticus was expounding on farm problems when Walter interrupted to ask if there was any molasses in the house Walter poured syrup on his vegetables and meat with a generous hand. He would probably have poured it into his milk glass had I not asked what the sam hill he was doing It was then that Calpurnia quested my presence in the kitchen She was furious, and when she was furious Calpurnias grammar became erratic Theres some folks who dont eat like us, she whispered fiercely Jem and Walter returned to school ahead of me: staying behind to advise Atticus of Calpurnias iniquities was worth a solitary sprint past the Radley Place. She likes Jem bettern she likes me, anyway, I concluded, and suggested that Atticus lose no time in packing her off. . . Have you ever considered that Jem doesnt worry her half as much? Atticuss voice was flinty. Ive no intention of getting rid of her, now or ever' (27-30). Later in the book, however, Scout changes. She now tries to control her temper, and is somewhat successful. One example of this is when Cecil Jacobs, another of Scouts classmates, insults Atticus by saying that Atticus defended Niggers. Scout remembers that she shouldnt fight, and walks away. Cecil Jacobs made me forget. He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finchs daddy defended niggers You gonna take that back boy? You gotta make me first! he yelled I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus had said, then dropped my fists and walked away, Scouts a cow-ward! ringing in my ears (80-81). Scout also learns to respect and value Calpurnia. .

A Great Use For SWOT Analysis in Research Paper Writing
A Great Use For SWOT Analysis in Research Paper WritingIf you're doing the drafting for your research paper, then it would be a wise decision to include some SWOT analysis in the research writing process. This is the 'spillover' part of the project. This analysis helps guide the researcher into the project of their dreams. It helps the researcher to determine if he is starting in the right direction and gives them some great ideas on how to move forward. It works in a similar way as the projections work for different people. It is a means to judge whether the individual is on the right track, based on the factors that exist in a particular situation. The analysis of SWOT helps the writer to know whether he or she is in the right place and the direction in which they should head in their research. This may be different for every individual, but for a writer's idea of where to start in their research, SWOT analysis is a helpful tool. So, how can you use this tool to make your research pa per more effective? You should try to follow the right direction: The SWOT analysis itself is not meant to be an indicator of the writer's idea of where he or she should be headed in his or her research. It only attempts to provide a means of assessing the writer's idea, based on certain factors that exist at a given point in time. This is supposed to be a simple method to identify the right direction, based on the information that is at hand. For instance, if you write down that your research paper is written by someone who has lots of experience, then you would then try to stay away from past and present references in the paper. If you write about what the individual had been doing recently, then you would do well to look at some of the individuals who have just come up recently. Do you have an idea on who these individuals are? This will tell you how you should proceed with your research: Even though your analysis says that you are going down the right path, even though your knowled ge about the subject is current, the above applies. So, it's really up to you to keep a check on things.Take some notes: At the end of the day, it is all about taking the logical step and following the goals that you set before you. Thus, you need to take note of the things that are out of line with your plan. But if you have your facts correct and have followed your plan carefully, then your research paper will be perceived in a positive light.Insight into one's plan may be like a doctor's pen pal. A plan that is out of line could be a painful stroke for the doctor. In other words, you should take the time to find out the flaws in your plan, or the errors that are there, so that you can rectify them before you continue with your research.

When Does College Students Writing Informative Essays?
When Does College Students Writing Informative Essays? When do college students write informative essays? I recently spoke with a student who was struggling in her college English classes. She had taken AP English, but not AP Writing. This is not unusual for a college student, although it can be very frustrating. What did she need to do to get better grades? How could she get good grades if she didn't know how to write an essay? And was there a way for her to get a C in writing? We were talking about this because I'd been a college professor for more than 25 years. I knew all the ins and outs of writing essays, and I helped them for a living. So I thought I'd share my thoughts. Let's begin with what they don't teach you in college.First, you have to know how to use the word 'aloud.' Some college students use their writing voice too high, sometimes even annoying. You don't want that. To make your writing sound effective, use a more moderate voice, and remember to change your tone as the topic changes. You'll notice that it will work to your advantage.Second, writing essays requires proper grammar and punctuation. Write each paragraph with the punctuation marks in the correct place, and be sure to write in a 'good' tone. That is, use proper capitalization, short sentences, and proper punctuation.Third, you need to learn how to control your usage of significant words. Avoid using uncommon or difficult words. Your entire essay won't make sense unless you avoid these types of words and abbreviations. They will limit your audience, and it will make you appear to be uneducated and unprofessional.Fourth, college students don't have time to practice writing a formal essay on everything. You will have to write one focused on a specific topic. Try to find something that has been discussed in class, or even find something that was covered in a research paper. As I said, you can spend a lifetime learning how to write a good college essay. You just have to be dedicated and eager to learn. If you can get your professors to read your work, you will go far in your life.

Free Essays on Crito
In Platoââ¬â¢s Crito, Socrates has been sentenced to death by the court of Athens and is being held until his execution. The Crito is the recorded account of the conversation between Socrates and his friend Crito, in which Crito is trying to convince Socrates that he should save his life and escape, while Socrates argues that he must stay and accept his punishment. One of the arguments concerning the point of view that it is morally right for Socrates to escape from prison and save his own life is the following: 1.) Socrates is a parent. 2.) A parent has a responsibility to provide and care for his or her child. 3.) If a parent neglects this responsibility than the parent is putting the childââ¬â¢s safety in jeopardy. 4.) It is morally wrong for a person to put another personââ¬â¢s safety into jeopardy. 5.) If a parent is not present in his or her childââ¬â¢s life it is the same as the parent neglecting his or her responsibility to provide and care for the child. 6.) If Socrates does not escape from prison and is executed he will be dead. 7.) If Socrates is dead he will not be present in his childrenââ¬â¢s lives. 7.) Therefore it is morally right for Socrates to escape from prison. Directly opposing this argument is the argument of why it is morally wrong for Socrates to escape from prison. 1.) It is morally wrong for a person to choose to do evil over good. 2.) The laws are set up to tell people how to act justly and to maintain peace and order within a society. 3.) It is morally right to maintain order and peace. 4.) Every citizen is morally required to follow the law to maintain order and peace within the city. 5.) Socrates is a citizen of the city of Athens. 6.) Socrates was convicted and sentenced to be executed according to the Athenian procedures of the law. 7.) Free Essays on Crito Philosophers have existed since man could think freely. However, by nature they are controversial and often disliked or misunderstood. Such is the case with Socrates in Platoââ¬â¢s Crito. Because of his views, Socrates has been thrown in prison. During his trial in Athens he was convicted of the accused crimes by the law and sentenced to death. Now Socrates awaits his death in prison. The first argument that Crito makes is that if Socrates remains in prison then it will reflect badly on all of his friends. However, Socrates replies that a man should not worry about what others think of him. Rather they should worry about living well. While Crito tries to persuade Socrates to leave the prison with him, Socrates gives forth many reasons why it would be wrong for him to leave the prison. First of all there is a simple principle that they must both agree upon. And that is that one cannot combat evil with evil. Once that is out of the way Socrates asks Crito, What is a man to do, ââ¬Å"what he proclaims to be right or what he knows is wrong?â⬠Obviously the answer is what a man proclaims to be right. However, in this case Socrates knows he should challenge the courts decision, but at what cost. For you see, Socrates has already proclaimed that evil cannot be combated with evil, and for him to be challenging the courts he would be defacing Athens laws and customs. To do this would be the same as doing wrong to the Athenian people. So in reality Socrates is caught in a ââ¬Å"catch 22.â⬠Socrates also explains that to harm the laws would be to deny his citizenship. The laws have always existed and have controlled his life since before he was born. The laws also governed his education and daily activities. In all actuality he is a slave to the laws. And as it is improper for a slave to disobey or strike his master, Socrates is unable to harm the laws, because they are on different planes of existence. Socrates also adds tha... Free Essays on Crito 1.) The Crito was written by Plato, who recounted the conversation held between Crito and Socrates just before his death. Socrates was charged with the corruption of the youth and was given a choice of exile or death. He chose death, and Crito was not at all happy about his decision. Crito felt that Socrates had been wronged by the government and should escape into exile. Socrates disagreed, saying that responding to evil with evil is wrong. If Socrates escaped, he would be doing harm to society as a whole. By escaping it could be seen as him trying to destroy the laws and in turn, the whole city by his actions, undermining the law. Socrates feels that ââ¬Å"You must either persuade it [the laws] or obey its orders, and endure in silence whatever it instructs you to endureâ⬠¦ (p.51)â⬠In other words, Socrates feels that it is wrong to protest the laws of the city because it disrupts the society, making them think that itââ¬â¢s okay to disobey laws and to protest and be violent against them, ultimately ruining the structural society. By escaping into exile, Socrates would be going against his own philosophy. Going into exile means that he would be fighting evil with evil and that he is not doing his part as a citizen. However, most importantly, Socrates feels that life is not worth living if the moral part of us is corrupted and that going into exile is doing moral harm. Socrates also knows that he made the decision to remain in Athens which means that he thinks the laws are just and right. If he felt they werenââ¬â¢t, he could have left and gone elsewhere at any time. However, he did not; therefore he made a social contract to obey the laws through his citizenship, and to accept his sentence of death that he himself chose. If Socrates thought exile was the right thing to do, he wouldââ¬â¢ve chosen that as his sentence instead. He did have a choice in the beginning, and thereââ¬â¢s no turning back now. If he went into exile now an... Free Essays on Crito Philosophy 1010-008 Crito and Euthyphro Crito The "Crito" seems intended to exhibit the character of Socrates in two lights, one as the philosopher, and the other simply as the good citizen, who having been unjustly condemned is willing to give up his life in obedience to the laws of the State. The days of Socrates are drawing to an end. The fatal ship has been seen off Sunium. Time is precious and Crito has come early in order to gain his consent to plan an escape. Crito believes, his friends, who can afford to help Socratesââ¬â¢ escape to Thessely, or any other place, can easily accomplish this. Crito will have no difficulty in finding friends in Thessaly and other places, who would protect Socrates and welcome him to stay. Socrates is afraid that Crito is being influenced by the opinions of the many. Socrates believes that you should only value the opinions of the experts. You do not go to a shoe salesman with a question about your health, just as you donââ¬â¢t ask a doctor about the best shoe. ââ¬Å"But why, my dear Crito, should we care about the opinion of the many? The most reasonable people, to whom one should pay more attention, will believe that things were done as they were done.â⬠Crito. ââ¬Å"But do you see, Socrates, that the opinion of the many must be regarded, as is evident in your own case, because they can do the very greatest evil to anyone who has lost their good opinion.â⬠Socrates. ââ¬Å"I only wish, Crito, that they could; for then they could also do the greatest good, and that would be well. But the truth is, that they can do neither good nor evil: they cannot make a man wise or make him foolish; and whatever they do is the result of chance. (Plato: Five Dialogues 44c-e).â⬠ââ¬Å"One should follow the opinion of the wise (physicians and trainers) with regard to the health of the body. Life would not be worth living in an unhealthy body.â⬠According to Socrates if you take the advice of the many it is l...
